Via Ferratas in the Dolomites

The peaks of the Dolomites -Unesco World’s Heritage Site- are one of the most amazing and enchanting shows that our planet can offer. Elegant and majestic mountains, unique in the world. When you watch them from the valleys the dolomitic peaks seem absolutely unreachable. Not by chance, to describe the endeavors of those who have reached them we use adjectives like "epic", "legendary" or "incredible".

Indeed the mountaineers -specially those of the pioneering climbing era, when they could not rely on the equipment available today- show physical, mental and endurance skills that can sometimes appear amazing, if not even superhuman.

The mountain hikers would thinh that their desttiny is to only watch the marvelous and majestic dolomitic peaks, being only able to imagine the priceless emotions that one feels after reaching those spectacular scenic points in the clouds and being only able to envy those who can do those thrilling climbs. Actually, a fantastic tool gives the mountain enthusiasts as well the chance to live those experiences: the Via Ferratas.

The via ferratas in the Dolomites are marvelous opportunities for all those who love the mountains. They are equipped paths that allow also not particularly expert hikers to reach peaks that -otherwise- could be reached only by experienced climbers. Thanks to the hookings with which they are equipped (metal wires, suspended bridges, ladders, boardwalks and gangways, rods and other anchorings) the hikers can face spectacular paths and incredibòy beautiful and evocative environments, crossing narrow clefts and steep couloirs, overcoming pmajestic walls and dominating vertiginous cliffs.

The via ferratas must be faced with the correct equipment (a basic gear that allows to hook to the wires and to the hookings of the via: helmet, climbing harness and via ferrata kit) and, specially for non-experienced hikers, under the supervision of a mountain guide.

The via ferratas in the Dolomites give te chance to reach evocative peaks offering incredible experiences, and priceless emotions before absolutely unforgettable landscapes.

The via ferratas of the Dolomites, a fantastic opportunity

Climbing through a via ferrata, then, is a fantastic opportunity for the mountain enthusiasts; perfect for adults, kids and families, the via ferrata can be considered a great activity between a mountain excursion and a real mountaineerimg climb.

In Italy the first via ferrata was set up in 1880; the mountain guides of Madonna di Campiglio equipped the east side of Mount Cima Brenta making it easier to reach it for their customers and for the mountain enthusiasts. Today Via delle Bocchette is probably the most renowned among the high altitude vias in the Dolomites. It is a system of several via ferratas, a group of equipped trails developing through the whole Mount Brenta Range and crossing thin, sharp and scenic aerial ledges that offer spectacular views on evocative and thrilling alpine landscapes.

All the mountains of the Dolomites offer an endless number of via ferratas of various difficulties and length; some can also be done in the winter. It is also possible to make marvelous multi-day tours climbing through several equipped trails.

The choice of via ferratas in the Dolomites is really inexaustible; every mountainous range offers many spectacular vie ferrate; some examples:

  • Via Ferrata delle Mèsules and Via Ferrata Brigata Tridentina in the Mount Sella Range,
  • Via Ferrata Tomaselli in the Fanis-Lagazuoi Range and Via Ferrata Lipella in the Tofane Range,
  • Via Ferrata de Luca Innerkofler to Mount Paterno and Via Ferrata delle Scalette on the Torre di Toblin in the spectacular Tre Cime di Lavaredo,
  • Via Ferrata Oskar Schuster to Sassopiatto and Via Ferrata al Catenaccio d’Antermoia,
