Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino Natural Park

The first characteristics that immediately enchant those who visit the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park for the first time are the opulence and the brightness of its colours: the wonderful shades of green, from the dark one of the centuries-old forests to the brighter one of pastures and meadows, the deep red of the rock of Mount Lagorai, the amazing pink of the Pale di San Martino besides the enchanting blue of the marvelous alpine lakes. The herds of roes eand deers, then, insert and move around this marvelous environment some evocative "reddish spots".

This wonderful park extends on a surface of almost two hundred square kilometers and it was established in 1967 to promote and, most of all, protect the integrity and the beauty of contiguous yet extremely motley and different environments. It features an incredibly evocative and scenic territory characterized by immaculate environments. Within the park we can find: the Pale di San Martino, a portion of the Mount Lagorai Range, a part of the Lusia-Cima Bocche chain and the Paneveggio Forest, just to mention a few places.

Most of the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park holds areas that have become EU recognized Special Protection Areas. Among the many peculiarities of the park there is the fact that Nature and Man live together in wonderful harmony and in perfecr balance; the ancient human activities connected to the forest and to the pastures weave with tourism keeping a respectful cohabitation in the rational and sustainable use of the resourses, promoting and respecting this unique territory.

Natural reserve

The Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park is divided in reserves; some areas, called  "integrali" riserves are zones of high value (the Pale di San Martino, the area of Mount Castellazzo and Mount Colbricon), other areas -called "guided" riserves- are places where farming and pastoralism are allowed in their traditional ways (Calaita, Paneveggio, valley Val Canali, valley Valsorda), the "controlled" riserves are those where the human settlements are more remarkable and where one can find, for example, ski tracks, ski-lifts and cable cars, the "special faunal" riserves are the areas where scientific researches are developed to deepen the knowledge on the speciies, the "special forest" riserves, then, are those where the forest, left to its natural evolution, offers the environment where ecological researches are possible.

The Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park with its various environments and ecosystems, features a very rich and extremely decorative flora. The king of this endless landscape of the plant life of the park is the Red Spruce, a marvelous tree whose trunk provides an amazing resonant wood that is one of the most precious materials for building musical instruments. The park’s wild life, as well, is incredibly rich, motley and evocative and it is typical of the Dolomites region; in the very beautiful and wide wild life area of the Visitor’s Centre in Paneveggio it is possible to admire -very closely- the deers, the animals that are the symbol of the whole park.
