Moena is a mavelous dolomitic village rising in valley Val di Fassa, right at the border with valley Val di Fiemme; it is part of the villages that make Ladinia and the "Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme" (Magnificent Fiemme Community). The territory covered by the municipality of Moena is at an altitude between 1’094 and 2’823 meters; the residential area is at an elevation of 1’184 meters.
This stupendous place is surrounded, dominated, protected and embellished by the dolomitic ranges of Mount Latemar -with Mount Toac and Mount Sas da Ciamp-, of the Monzoni -with Mount Cima Vallaccia and Mount Sas da Pesmeda- and of Mount Catinaccio -with Mount Roda di Vaèl. On its south side Moena is dominated by the marvelous woods that cover the bulk of Mount Sas da Mezodì, in the Viezzena Range.
The main area of the village is laid on a stupendous hollow squeezed in the middle of marvelous dolomitic mountains: it sits on a really strategic position, central in relation to the Tre Valli (Three Valleys) ski area that offers very modern ski-lifts and cable cars and spectacular ski tracks.
This marvelous dolomitic village got its name from the Ladin and Venetian word moena or molena that comes from the Latin word mollis –meaning soft-; in this case it means a soft, swampy ground . The first historical documents of Moena date back to 1164, and they concern the consecration of the Church of San Vigilio by Adelpreto, Prince-Bishop of Trento. From 1318, then, it is part of the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme (Magnificent Fiemme Community). Between 1805 and 1810 Moena was part of the Bavarian Kingdom until 1810; after the Tyrolese insurrection it was subjugated by the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy and after the Congress of Vienna, together with all the Tyrol, it was assigned back to the Austian Empire. In late 800 the first hotel of the village was born and it kicked off tourism that definitively took off in 1905, once the Strada delle Dolomiti (Dolomite Road) was opened in the Arabba – Moena stretch.
Most of the people in Moena speaks Moenat, the Moena variation of the Fascian, the Ladin dialect of valley Val di Fassa. At the border of Predazzo and in the hamlets of Medil and Forno people speak Fiammazzo, a Venetian dialect from Trento.
Besides the variety of the very high level sports offers and the wonders of a marvelous and immaculate nature, Moena offers many other extremely appealing attractions and cultural offers: the marvelous Saint Vigil Church with its gothic bell tower and the art works of the local painter Valentino Rovisi or the little San Volfgang Church with its evocative Baroque wooden ceiling are only some examples.
The Istituto Culturale Ladino (Ladin Cultural Institute) strives to preserve and promote culture and traditions of all the villages in Val di Fassa. Countless cultural initiatives animate the village throughout the year entertaining the visitors and offering them the chance to know this wonderful territory.
In Someda there is a museum dedicated to the Great War (World War One) in the Dolomites; its curators have also restored the fox holes and the communication trenches that were used in the Moena area during the war.
Moena can provide never ending possibilities with fantastic sport activities both in the summer and in the winter. It offers marvelous environments that welcome the enthusiasts of all the ski disciplines–downhill and cross country- on track and off-piste, including ski mountaineering, freeride and snowboard, besides snowshoes excursions.
And then trekking, skating, mountain bike, canyoning and rafting besides, of course!, climbing on spectacular rock walls through the classic and sports vias and through the very beautiful vie ferrate of the Dolomites. During the summer ski-lifts and cable cars allow to reach the comfortable starting points for an endless number of excursion among very beautiful alpine lakes, evocative woods and majestic rock walls.
