Freeride skiing is definitely the highest expression of ski and one of the most thrilling winter outdoor activities. An unmissable experience for those who love to get out of the box and to enjoy the silence of nature broken only by the light sound of their trail or by the soft one of the snow that falls from the trees.
Freeride skiing adds to the fun of skiing on ski-tracks the thrill of moving within a wild and immaculate environment, generous of spectacular views that's hard to admire from the tracks and that offer a unique feeling of absolute freedom through exciting ski descents on fresh-fallen and powder snow or on spring firn.
The Dolomites are among the most spectacular mountains of the world; UNESCO World Heritage Site, they are wonderful and legendary mountains also knpwn as the Skiers' Paradise. Particularly, they offer an incredible series of ski tracks that stretch endless through marvelous valleys before spectacular peaks, served with the very efficient and modern ski lifts and cable cars of the Dolomiti Superski, one of the world's largest ski areas.
But the Dolomites save their best for the ski mountaineers and the freeride skiers for whom they treasure their most precious gems; the freeride skiing in the Dolomites offers an unlimited series of paths and all the freeride ski lovers can find a unique and spectacular territory full of evocative woods, exciting steep couloirs, scenic cols, suggestive gorges and endless slopes through which they can do priceless ski rides that they will never forget.
The Dolomiti Superski ski area offers an endless range of freeride ski paths in the Dolomites; with an easy approach (the ascent is mostly done taking the mountain railways) and a likewise easy return that takes back to the ski track, off-piste ski can be done with incredible satisfaction in all the locations of this spectacular ski area.
In the ski area of Cortina d'Ampezzo, that offers more than 200 freeride itineraries, there are the beautiful off-piste paths of the Tofane, like the renowned Bus de Tofana, an all-skiable 1'200 meter elevation loss couloir; the off-piste paths of the area of Faloria and Cristallo, like the charming Ski 18 descent that comes down from the summit of Mount Faloria all the way to the center of Cortina; the little woods and the slopes of the area of Averau and of Cinque Torri; the couloirs of the area of Falzarego and Lagazuoi.
In the Mount Sella Range, thank to the Pordoi cable car, the hikers can reach the fantastic couloirs and the exciting long valleys through which they can have amazing freeride ski rides: Canale Joel, Canale Holzer, Canale Pordoi, Val delle Fontane, Val Mezdì and many more. Valley Val Badia and Arabba, then, offer unlimited very beautiful slopes for the "proximity off-piste". For example, the areas around the Capanna Nera cable car, Pralongia and Arlara feature some marvelous and easy paths with a very fast return to the track, just as the ski area of Porta Vescovo.
The Queen of the Dolomites, Mount Marmolada, is also "Queen of powder snow" for the freeride ski lovers; tank to the north facing exposure it frequently offers fantastic powder snow. Through the Glacier of Mount Marmolada, in a majestic and extraordinary environment, the skiers are spoiled for choice among endless freeride paths that start from Punta Rocca, at an elevation of 3'269 meters. Countless descents longer than 1'200 meters like the Bellunese Vecchia, the Intrà i Sas, the Lydia and the Canyon.
San Martino di Castrozza rises in an area rich of itineraries that are perfect for the freeride skiing; in the Alpe Tognola, for example, the Val Cigolera Off-Piste or the slopes around the Conca and Scandola cable cars, perfect for learning to move the first steps on fresh-fallen snow; in the Pale di San Martino, the Rosetta Off-Piste that offers a technical, spectacular and adventurous experience through the very beautiful couloirs that bring the skiers back towards the valley or the thrilling off-piste through beautiful valley Val Pradidali until valley Val Canali.
In valley Val di Fassa, in the area of Moena, Alpe di Lusia offers the easy off-piste on the mild declivities of the "Lastè", the steep little woods of the "Piavac" cable car and the beautiful descent from Cima Lastè. On the north side of Mount Col Margherita, by Passo San Pellegrino, there is a controlled area, unique in all the Dolomiti Superski: the Col Margherita Freeride Park that offers breath taking off-piste descents through slopes and steep, wide couloirs where you can let your skis go and through sweet and sparse woods where one can pleasantly ski among the trees. The north facing exposure guarantees perfect snow conditions during most of the winter season.
All theese, anyway, are only some examples; endless possibilities for thrilling freeride skiing in the Dolomites can be found in the Dolomiti di Brenta Range, in Madonna di Campiglio, in the ski stations of valley Val Zoldana and of Alleghe, in valley Val di Fiemme and in many other places in the Dolomites.
