Climbing and Yoga in Val di Fassa

The Fassa Guide mountain guides in collaboration with As We Flow are organising some intense and exciting days to discover, experience or fine-tune the practice of climbing, combined with yoga.

Learning to climb is not only tying a knot or putting on a pair of tight shoes: climbing is much more than that... It is not easy to describe the feelings that are created while climbing, as well as those on the ground with your partner, or the extended family that is built around this passion. But even this is not enough.

Climbing is often associated with a complete approach to life, it becomes a whole. This deep and real characteristic can also be found in another of our passions: yoga. It is from this similarity, along with many other aspects of complementarity between the two disciplines, that we decided to give life to As We Flow (on Instagram @as.we.flow).

We are Lorenzo and Nairi, a climber and a yogi, born and raised in Veneto but based in Milan until a few months ago. We share a great passion for what we do and for the outdoor world, which allows us to practice our disciplines in contact with nature and our emotions. We both feel we have a lot of energy to share, along with our adventures, with other enthusiasts.

The flow that we find in a yoga practice or when we climb is the same: a journey, an infinite path that begins and that must be taken care of in every detail to get the most benefit from it, a continuous flow of sensations made up of gestures and movements of the body in space. Fluid, dynamic gestures accompanied by the breath, which must be trained and controlled.

We like to think of climbing as a meditation in movement - almost a contemplation - which brings us back to the present moment, reconnecting us with ourselves and our breath. Being able to focus our mind only on what we are doing, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience of that moment is one of the many common aspects of yoga and climbing, which makes these two disciplines close and complementary.

Practising yoga releases tensions that have built up in the body over time and at the same time reconnects us with our breath, teaching us to fully inhale and exhale, letting go past tensions and blocks. By slowing the pace we train the mind to concentrate on one thing at a time and to focus exclusively on what it is doing in that precise moment, without allowing it to float between a thousand other thoughts. And it is the same with climbing: as soon as you get in contact with the rock, everything else disappears!

It is the outdoor world the one we prefer and the one in which we practice our activities; it is nature that commands and guides our instincts. The mind plays a fundamental role in both disciplines, and the work required on it is demanding.

The feelings and energy behind the project are many, the journey is still long and the ideas more and more (we have the creative mind of a climber here!); we hope and believe we will be able to involve a wider audience in the flow that we share and accompanies us in our adventures.
