The trekking to Passo Cigolade in the Catinaccio Range, is a renowned excursion to a beautiful isolated pass squeezed among powerful Dolomia walls. It offers an incredible view on the side of Mount Roda di Vael and on the characteristic Torre Finestra (“Window Tower”) that features a natural window in the rock. Places that are famous for the many Ladin legends such as the renowned story of the garden of King Laurino (he seems to be still guarding these peaks).

Information about the trekking to Passo Cigolade

The trekking to Passo Cigolade in the Catinaccio starts in the parking lot of the bottom station of the Paolina chair lift, between lake Lago Carezza and Passo Costalunga. From there, through some trails -rather steep at times-, the hikers will reach Rifugio Paolina (2’125 meters).

Now through trail number 539 the hikers will traverse all the way to the Christomannos Monument. From there the hikers will keep traversing and they will reach chalet Baita Pederiva (2’280 meters), characteristic family run rifugio. Now through trail number 541 the path passes under the majestic walls of the Torre Finestra and of Mount Roda di Vael before passing under a natural rock arch to go up to Passo Cigolade (2’552 meters). Then, the hikers will enjoy a spectacular view on valley Val del Gardeccia.

The descent takes place through the climb route.

N.B. it is possible to avoid the first steep stretch taking the cable car that leads to Rifugio Paolina. That would make the hike about two hours shorter.
