Information about the steep skiing in the Sella Couloirs

We begin our steep skiing excursion in the Sella couloirs by boarding the Sass Pordoi cable car that is going to take us up to the Rifugio Maria at 2950 meters, one of the most panoramic spots in the Dolomites. Once we reach the summit we begin a first nice run along the great couloir beginning at Forcella Pordoi and leading back to the starting point of the lift. Back at the top station we reach the Joel Couloir.

At the beginning it has a characteristic aerial passage on a very steep wide cornice; then it unfolds along the couloir nestled among the rocky faces and down on gentle slopes taking us back to Passo Pordoi; there we ride once again the cable car to the top. We begin right away by getting down the Holzer Couloir, very wide at the start but narrower and narrower as it goes; it finally opens again in the middle section, where a short rappel to overtake an icy buttress is often required. After exiting the couloir, we keep on skiing on nice slopes in the final section of Val Lasties, until we reach the lifts leading back to our starting point.

The freeride steep skiing excursion in the Sella couloirs includes an elevation loss of about 3200 meters in the off-piste skiing section. It requires good training and great mastering of technical skiing skills because of the OS (Excellent Skier) rating. Maximum incline is 50 degrees.
