Canazei, Cianacéi in Ladin, is -together with Campitello- the most renowned, visited and admired place in valley Val di Fassa. It is located in the north end of the valley, in a marvelous position; it stands on a wonderful verdant hollow among stupendous and majestic dolomitic ranges such as the Marmolada Range, the Sassolungo Range and the Sella Range.
It borders with the Provinces of Bolzano and Belluno. Its 1’465 meters of elevation make it the the highest village of the valley and one of the highest in Italy. With its wonderful and scenic position, with its rich history and with its long tradition of welcoming hospitality, Canazei gained a wonderful reputation and it is one of the most renowned and sought after villages of the Dolomites.
The residential area takes up an incredibly scenic and spectacular territory. Majestic and impressive peaks dominate enchanted forests, green pastures, pleasant meadows and picturesque little villages (the evocative hamlets of Penia, Gries and Alba further embellish the area). The village is a gem that can offer unforgettable experiences both in the winter and in the summer.
Canazei nurtures, protects and enhances its Ladin Culture (only 20% of the population is mother tongue Italian); just like all valley Val di Fassa and the areas surrounding the Monut Sella Massif, Canazei carries the signs of its long history in its architecture and in the village’s life that flows with folk celebrations and ancient traditions. The old activities, the customs and traditions are treasured and continually proposed to promote and explain the Ladin culture and traditions.
The immaculate nature, the pleasant hospitality of the countrymen and the many and very good hotels have made Canazei one of the most popular destinations in the Dolomites.
For the winter tourism, as far as all the ski disciplines are concerned (alpine skiing, off-piste skiing, ski mountaineering) and for snowshoeing, Canazei is considered a Paradise; it is part of the Sellaronda ski tour that connects it with the close valleys and with the villages of Corvara in Badia, Selva di Val Gardena and Livinallongo del Col di Lana. Many people consider Canazei the capital of winter sports in Val di Fassa, particularly thanks to its spectacular position, surrounded by the wonderful peaks of the massifs of Mount Marmolada, of Mount Sella and of Mount Sassolungo.
During the summer, as well, Canazei is one of the most sought after destinations of the Dolomites and it offers endless possibilities for excursions, trekking, sports and classic climbing, via ferratas, skating, mountain bike, canyoning and rafting. Then, ski-lifts and cable cars allow to reach the comfortable starting points for an endless number of hiking among very beautiful alpine lakes, evocative woods and majestic rock walls.
It also hosts one of the races of the Skyrunning World’s Championship, the Dolomites Skyrace. The race develops through a very beautiful loop path that starts from the center of the village and it culminates in Piz Boè (3’152 meters) before going back through valley Val Lasties.
The mountain guides of the Fassa Guide mountaineering school organize courses and excursions, both group excursions and with private mountain guide; stupendous activities and itineraries that will accompany you discovering the marvelous treasures of the Dolomites.
