The Oskar Schuster via ferrata is a fantastic equipped path in the range of Sassolungo. It is a demanding and thrilling climb through the couloirs of the north-east slope of Mount Sassopiatto. The Oskar Schuster via ferrata develops through the way that goes up to the summit of Mount Cima di Mezzo that was “opened” by Wilhelm Lohmueller and Oskar Schuster in 1896.
The environment in which the climb develops is among the most evocative in all the Dolomites and the view, both during the climb and from the summit, is the deserving reward for the effort lavished.
This scenic Oskar Schuster via ferrata stretches out through the north side of the mountain and it crosses a sequence of little couloirs alternating equipped stretches featuring wires and comfortable handholds and not equipped sections that could be rated as I° degree / I° degree superior. The technical issues in the non equipped stretches, though, do not feature extreme passages. The via ferrata features a 400 meters elevation gain, the whole excursion features a 800 meters elevation gain.
The Oskar Schuster via ferrata to the Sassopiatto does not have the usual metal plate indicating the starting point since it features several equipped stretches that partially cover the development of the climb. The path is equipped with a metal wire, some brackets, some rungs and a sturdy ladder that helps crossing a jump that, otherwise, would be rather hard. The most vertical stretch is equipped with a strong clamp. All in all the climb is pleasant, the handholds and the footholds are copious and very comfortable, there are no extremely demanding passages and the exposure is never extreme. The rock, then, almost always features comfortable steps.
The approach starts from Forcella Sassolungo (Rifugio Demetz), that is reachable with the cable car; after going down to Rifugio Vicenza we reach the attack of the Oskar Schuster via ferrata. The return takes place through a very beautiful dolomite itinerary that leads to Passo Sella through Rifugio Sassopiatto, Rifugio Pertini and Rifugio Friedrich-August.
