The Cesare Piazzetta via ferrata to Piz Boè is the most demanding equipped trail of the Sella Massif and one of the most demanding in all the Dolomites. It climbs up to the summit of Mount Piz Boè. A marvelously scenic yet extremely technical and physically hard via ferrata that climbs up along the east side of the mountainous range.
The Cesare Piazzetta via ferrata to Piz Boè in the Sella Massif is a grand itinerary. It is very demanding, especially during its first part. It requires good experience in I° and II° degree climbing with no wire. The starting stretch is almost vertical and one can pass it only thanks to the metal wires (the right use of the feet is crucial) while the last stretch, though less steep, calls for much caution because it is only partially equipped. At an elevation of 2850 meters the via ferrata comes to an end but there are further equipped stretches along the east ridge until the elevation of 3000 meters.
The Cesare Piazzetta via ferrata to Piz Boè features a 350 meters elevation gap (925 meters for the whole excursion). The equipment - metal wires, steps on the rock and a bridge made of metal wires - is very well maintained. The itinerary crosses long vertical and extremely exposed passages and it features some shelves that allow useful resting moments. The key passage of this via ferrata is the starting one: particularly demanding, due to the scarceness of handholds, it gives the arms a lot of work.
The approach of the excursion starts from Passo Pordoi that can be reached from Canazei in Val di Fassa or from Arabba, talking the cable car and then going down the couloir of Pordoi or walking through the trail that leads to Forcella Pordoi. On its final stretch the via ferrata offers two possible options: walking through the trail that leads to Forcella Pordoi or keeping climbing through the ridge to reach the trail that leads to the summit of Mount Piz Boé, at an elevation of 3152 meters.
The descent starts from Forcella Pordoi going down through a couloir down to Passo Pordoi, while from the summit of Piz Boé we go down towards Rifugio Boé or towards southwest going back to Forcella Pordoi.
