Trekking Viel dal Pan

This excursion covers a part of the Alta Via delle Dolomiti n.2 featuring a spectacular view on the perennial glacier of Mount Marmolada. The excursion is not very demanding because it mostly develops downhill but it features a technical stretch equipped with a metal wire right before lake Lago Fedaia. The hikers have to take the cable car to reach Col dei Rossi, starting point of the trekking excursion.

Information about the trekking Viel dal Pan

From the village of Alba di Canazei the cable car will take the hikers to the summit of Mount Col dei Rossi (2’400 meters) and to the Belvedere ski area. From there the path goes down a little through the ski track before going back up to reach chalet Baita Fredarola (2’388 meters).

The hikers will, then, enter the Alta Via delle Dolomiti n.2 that -keeping the elevation constant- leads them to Rifugio Viel dal Pan (2’432 meters) in about an hour; from the rifugio the view is breath taking and it stretches on the perennial glacier of Mount Marmolada.

From there the path slightly goes down until it enters trail number 601 that steeply goes down with some technical and exposed stretches (equipped with metal wire) and it leads to Passo Fedaia and to the namesake lake (2’058 meters).

That’s where chalet Baita Col de Cuck stands; it is run by Roberto Platter, renowned local mountain guide, and it offers very good typical dishes. From the pass the path keeps going through trail number 605 that goes down towards the valley.

After passing Hotel Villetta Maria (1’681 meters) and the nearby limestone mine, the hikers will go back to the starting point, the village of Alba di Canazei.
