The ski mountaineering excursion in Mount Sassongher to Val Scura couloir is a spectacular and challenging experience. It is a technical and complete hike, one of the most exciting in the Dolomites. The climb, with seal skins, develops through demanding slopes that sometimes require pick and crampons. The descent within a narrow, 800 meters long couloir, is a thrilling skiing opportunity featuring a dropped rappel.
The ski mountaineering in Sassongher to Val Scura couloir starts at the Col Pradat cableway station in Colfosco. After a descending stretch, with sealskins we climb the slope that leads to the foot of Sassongher (2665 meters). Proceeding through ledges and steep slopes (with crampons and pick) we reach Forcella Sassongher, 2435 meters, before gaining the top of the mountain and the beautiful, straight and steep descending couloir.
Skiing down the Val Scura is very rewarding. The ride does not include extreme difficulties and it runs nice and enjoyable till the end of the couloir where sometimes, depending on the snow, a dropped rappel (about 20 meters) is necessary. The descent, then, smoothly keeps on along a brook and through a nice wood to the starting point.
The ski mountaineering excursion to Valscura features a 600 meters elevation gain and a 1000 meters elevation loss. It requires good ski mountaineering skills, since it is rated as BSA (Good Mountain Skier). Max downhill declivity: 45 degrees.
