Information about the ski mountaineering excursion to Piccolo Vernel

The excursion starts from the parking lot by the ski lift of Fedaia Pass, at an elevation of 2074 meters. Climbing up along the ski track, we go through the valley that leads to Pian dei Fiacconi, 2626 meters, heading west toward the bottom of the rock ridge that comes down from Punta Penia’s secondary summit. Heading west after going round the rocks, we enter Vedretta del Vernel. Climbing up towards Forcella Marmolada, before reaching it, we move to the bottom of the North-East side of the mountain. Climbing through a slope squeezed between two rock walls, we get to a wide couloir.

Through the overhead slopes, then, we reach the summit. The beautiful and exciting ski descent is really intense and develops roughly through the climb route. Its unforgettable stretch is the “Canyon”, a narrow couloir squeezed between two impressive rock walls.

The ski mountaineering excursion to Piccolo Vernel in the Marmolada Range, features a 1200 meters elevation gain and loss (700 meters elevation gain using the ski lift). It requires good training and mastering of technical skills of ski mountaineering and is rated as OSA (Excellent Mountain Skier). Maximum incline is 45 degrees.
