The Schubert climbing route in the Sella range is a very beautiful climb through the evocative south side of Mount Piz Ciavazes. A spectacular route that has become a classic, one of the most repeated itineraries on this wall.
The ascent develops through the edge of the majestic chimney that divides the side of Mount Piz Ciavazes in two and that ends by ledge Cengia dei Camosci. Two huge cracks in the rock divide the wall in three sectors. The via is comfortably equipped through the whole path and its stops are all cemented.
Pit Schubert and Karl Heinz Matthies opened this itinerary on May 26th 1967 getting to ledge Cengia dei Camosci. The same Schubert, then, together with Klaus Werner got all the way to the summit of Mount Ciavazes a few days later, on June 3rd.
The ascent through the Schubert climbing route gives an interesting and fun climb on good rock and with continuous difficulties. The upper part features rock that sometimes can be friable with less continuous difficulties.
The climb covers a 250 meter elevation gain and it features a development of 265 meters. The last 8 lengths of which the climb consists can be covered in about 3 hours. The Schubert climbing route is rated VI-° maximum level of difficulty.
The descent starts on the trail that crosses ledge Cengia dei Camosci, at times rather exposed but well equipped with metal wires. It features a II° descending climb or, as an alternative, a rappel.
